Each year, Community Works produces a written response to Brighton & Hove City Council’s budget proposals, in collaboration with our members. We highlight the impact of the budget on local communities and on the voluntary and community sector. The Council’s budget for 2025/26 has now been set, but you can read our paper in the downloads box below.

Thank you to members who contributed your questions and concerns on this issue. Our Reps (and our CEO) took these to the Council’s two Overview & Scrutiny meetings and ensured they were considered. The Council met to discuss and approve the budget on 27 February. You can watch the live webcast or recording here.

Our budget response paper acknowledged the Council’s very challenging budget position for 2025/26, and the task of managing a large shortfall. We expressed thanks for the scaling back of savings to VCS-delivered services following receipt of additional government funds. In line with the VCS key messages, we called for the Council to develop a stronger partnership working with the VCS and to involve communities in decision-making.
